Like smog created by air pollution, electrosmog is created by electromagnetic field radiation from cell phones, wireless computers and networks, and new utility technologies like Smart Grids and Smart Meters. Electrosmog envelopes us 24-7…in our homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, even hotels, and no one really knows the long-term effects on our health, or on our DNA.

The ever-expanding electrosmog is comprised of several EMF or electromagnetic radiation fields of different intensity…from ELFs (extremely low frequency fields); to “dirty electricity” — a frequency that gets on wiring in our walls from electronics that contain transformers, and from compact fluorescent light bulbs and dimmer switches; to RFs (radio frequencies), and a subset of RF called microwave radiation emitted by cell phones, wireless networks and portable phones.

“All these radiation fields disrupt the regulation of the nervous system in our bodies,” said Camilla Rees, during a recent interview on my radio show “Your Super Natural Life.” Camilla, founder of ElectromagneticHealth.org, is one of the foremost advocates for safer cell phone and wireless technologies, and exposes the link between electromagnetic pollution and our health. “We are electromagetic beings,” she said, “and are especially vulnerable to unnatural electromagetic fields.”

Many people are becoming “electrosensitive” due, in part, to being exposed to more and more wireless devices like computers, printers and routers, cell phones, or from living near cell phone towers or antennas. According to Camilla, electrosensitivities can show up as acute symptoms like excessive fatigue, sleep disturbances, headaches, irritability, visual problems, memory loss, difficulty in concentrating, dizziness, and cardiovascular disruptions. Long-term symptoms include conditions like chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and other chronic pain syndromes. Also, German doctors have found that newly developing cancer cases are much higher within 400 meters of a cell tower. The risk of getting cancer increased by 200% after 5 years of exposure (H. Eger et al). Another study showed that within 350 meters of a cell phone tower there was a 300% increased incidence of cancer and a 900% increase in cancer among women alone (Wolf et al, 2004). “Even though you might not be experiencing symptoms now, doesn’t mean you won’t in the future due to increased exposure,” added Camilla.

Magda Havas, Ph.D., co-author with Camilla of “Public Health SOS: The Shadow Side of the Wireless Revolution,” says that it can take just a small amount over a long period of time to be effected. “Symptoms of electrohypersensitivity have been demonstrated at exposures that are a fraction (0.04%) of U.S. exposure guidelines, in part because the guidelines themselves only take into consideration a 30-minute exposure, not chronic exposures.” Magda is also author of the new BRAG Antenna Ranking of Schools Report which ranks U.S. schools and shows parents and teachers how to gauge the risk of radiation exposure from neighborhood antennas.

What sets people up for greater sensitivity to EMFs? Here are some factors that are known or suspected:

Excessive EMF exposure, as well as long-term exposure

Any metal in the body, like metal dental fillings, implants, braces, metal prostheses, and pace makers and deep brain stimulators for Parkinson’s

Conditions like MS and Lyme Disease

Excess levels of heavy metals in the body as well as genetic factors influencing detoxification

Chronic infection in the body, including often hidden dental infections

10 Ways to Avoid Electrosmog Hazards:

Eliminate as much wireless technology in your home as possible. Rewire the most basic connections, like the computer to the printer, and the computer to the internet, for example. Turn off wireless at night, do your body can rest and repair.

Don’t sleep with electric blankets, electric heating pads or with electric clock radios or telephone answering machines near your head.

Don’t let your teenager sleep with a cell phone under his/her pillow.

Use a corded landline telephone instead of a cordless one.

Don’t use your laptop computer in your lap, and while using a laptop turn the wireless internet connection off in the software, except while you need it.

If you’re pregnant, stay far away from things like BlackBerries, which emit very high magnetic radiation fields while in use that might cause miscarriage.

If you live close to a cell tower, block radiation coming into your home by using special paints, film and fabric to cover your windows. (These can be found here.)

Learn how to measure the various fields in your home by using meters and detection equipment that measure specific frequencies. (See the EMF-Help Blog™ on the Campaign for Radiation Free Schools Facebook Group)

Keep your immune system healthy by avoiding contact with toxic chemicals in your home and detoxing your body from time to time. Camilla says there seems to be a synergistic effect between the toxic chemicals we encounter that are accumulating in our bodies, and EMFs. She points to research showing higher body burden of chemicals in people who are electrosensitive.

Be aware of metal in your life because metal reflects EMFs and can create hotspots. This would include, metal coils in mattresses, metal furniture, metal eyeglasses, metals in your mouth and metal underwire bras

Corn dogs, canned fruit and a bag of chips…that was a typical hot lunch offering at the posh private school my daughter attended in Marin County, California six years ago. It took me, and five other Marin moms, more than a year to initiate organic lunch programs in our local private schools. We had to work hard to convince parents and administrators that it was worth an extra $1 a day to serve organic food to our kids. There are still many schools in my county where kids are given unhealthy (highly processed, microwaved and packaged) foods and drinks (soda and high fructose corn syrup sweetened juices) on campuses and in cafeterias. Instead of real and nutritious food, they are eating food that doesn’t help their brains or bodies develop optimally.

“If we can’t fix the broken parts of our lunch program here in this community, with our incredible bounty of organic local food, our ready and able thought leaders, organizations, students and community members, then who in the U.S. can?” said Judi Shils, Founder/Director of Teens Turning Green which just launched Project Lunch, a community-based action group to help mentor school lunch programs. Its goal is to ensure that every child in every school has the opportunity to eat healthy food at lunch, and to understand the vital connection between health food and a healthy mind, body, and earth.

Hopefully, in this current climate of health awareness, Judi’s Lunch Project will go smoother than my endeavor to improve the food at school six years. My experience looked something like this:

I, along with five other moms from different private schools in my area, organized a food committee and enlisted the help of parents, teachers and staff. We sent out a survey to the parents asking if they’d be interested in their child receiving an organic lunch and if they’d be willing to pay one or two dollars more per day than what they were paying for corn dogs, canned fruit and chips. We received comments back like “My child won’t eat bean sprouts!” or “My child likes to eat tasty food!” I had to explain that organic didn’t mean either of those…it just meant there would be no pesticides or artificial colors and sweeteners or genetically modified organisms.

After we finally got the go-ahead from the parents and heads of schools, we interviewed a series of caterers and local organic markets. One called Good Earth, an organic and natural foods market in Fairfax, California won – their food passed the taste test (we had kids sample the food) and they were less expensive than the caterers. Good Earth hired a chef and rented a facility to accommodate our needs, since this was their first venture into a large-scale lunch program. It was agreed that the food would look and taste as similar to the food the kids were already getting (no corn dogs!) in their current hot lunch program, only healthier.

Since they didn’t make pizza they way the kids were used to seeing it, Good Earth contracted with a local pizza parlor and supplied them with organic whole wheat pizza dough. I watched with anticipation that first day the new, organic pizza was delivered. And you know what? The kids hated it! They wouldn’t eat it. It was too dry they said. So a compromise was made and from then on, all the pizza, bread and pasta would be made from organic white flour instead of whole wheat.

The challenges continued. I was also on a committee to plan a school picnic. The majority of the parents on the committee voted for hot dogs, pizza, watermelon and soda. I raised my hand and asked if it would be possible to have organic food at the event. The chair of the committee said: “No, we’re just going to have normal food.” I countered with, “So, by normal, you mean food that’s been sprayed with pesticides?” There was silence. Then I asked if we could at least have organic watermelon. “What are you… a Food Nazi?” the chairperson asked. (It’s hard to believe that this conversation took place in Marin County!) This time the silence came from me. I decided to ignore her question and volunteered to call one of the local farms and have organic watermelons delivered to our picnic.

Currently the organic hot lunch program is running smoothly, and Good Earth now serves over 4,000 kids a week in 9 Marin County schools. Admittedly, it may be easier to get a program going at a private school than at a public school offering a low-cost or free lunch program because of the bureaucratic approval process involved.

It’s up to us to make requests to our school boards to make healthy changes in the meals and snacks that include less sugar, trans fats and high fructose corn syrup, and more fresh foods, whole grain items, and organic or local ingredients. Remember, children are consuming as much as 50 percent of their calories during the school day. And leading generals and admirals are telling us that a quarter of young people are too overweight to serve their country in uniform. Consider including preschools, daycare, Sunday school, and colleges. Think about the transformation that can occur if we had fewer cases of obesity and diabetes!

It’s in line with First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative which supports healthier food in schools by, among other things, increasing funding for school meals, promoting farm-to-school programs that get fresh fruits and vegetables into school cafeterias, and updating nutrition standards for the foods sold in vending machines. In addition, The House Education and Labor Committee is working on the Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act. Testifying before the committee, Top Chef and restaurateur Tom Colicchio said, “There can be no better investment—no better stimulus to our economy—than feeding this nation’s children healthily and well. If we give the kids in this country delicious and nutritious food, we will instill in them a lifetime preference for healthy eating that will translate into vast savings in health care costs down the line.”

There’s never been a better time to instigate changes in how our school systems buy, prepare, and serve food to our kids! For more information on creating an organic hot lunch program at your school contact: Project Lunch, and look at Chapter 10 in my book Super Natural Home where I offer “10 Steps on Creating an Organic School Lunch Program at Your Child’s School.”

Many mothers-to-be prepare for birth by taking pre-natal vitamins, exercising, eating well and avoiding cigarettes and alcohol, but there’s something else that’s necessary as well.

I talked about what to look out for when buying personal care and household products, which toxic chemicals to absolutely avoid, and how to create a healthy nursery and kids’ room.

It’s time to start putting on sunscreen…or is it? There are lots of other options to protect yourself from getting burned this summer, like wearing protective clothing, finding shade, and avoiding noon sun. Plus, there’s no consensus that sunscreen prevents skin cancer and in some cases it’s been shown to actually increase your risk! If you do use sunscreen, make sure what you put on your skin is safe and effective.

I love the sun, and when I was a teen I used to mix baby oil and iodine and rub in on my skin before I went to the beach. While this seems pretty foolish, some of the sunscreens on the market today aren’t much better. One great resource for information is the new 2010 Sunscreen Guide put out by The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit research organization based in Washington, DC. Its scientists analyzed 500 sunscreens and reported that only 8%, or 39 were safe and effective. They found false advertising, unproven claims by manufacturers, and ingredients that haven’t been tested for safety.

Here’s what Jane Houlihan, EWG Senior Vice President for Research had to say: “Many sunscreens available in the U.S. may be the equivalent of modern-day snake oil, plying customers with claims of broad-spectrum protection but not providing it, while exposing people to potentially hazardous chemicals that can penetrate the skin into the body. When only 8 percent of sunscreens rate high for safety and efficacy, it’s clear that consumers concerned about protecting themselves and their families are left with few good options.”

EWG recommends the following when buying sunscreen:

Don’t be fooled by high SPF. Anything higher than “SPF 50+” can tempt you to stay in the sun too long, suppressing sunburn but not other kinds of skin damage. The FDA says these numbers are misleading.

Avoid Vitamin A-laced creams listed as “retinyl palmitate” on the label. New government data show that tumors and lesions develop sooner on skin coated with vitamin A.

Avoid the chemical oxybenzone, a synthetic estrogen that penetrates the skin and contaminates the body.

Look for active ingredients zinc, titanium, avobenzone or Mexoryl SX. These substances protect skin from harmful UVA radiation and remain on the skin, with little if any penetrating into the body.

Skip sunscreens with insect repellent – if you need bug spray, buy it separately and apply it first.

Avoid sprays and powders which cloud the air with tiny particles of sunscreen that may not be safe to breathe. Choose creams instead.

One of the most disturbing things I read in the EWG report was the use of the Seal of Approval from the The Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF) which is found on hundreds of sun protection products. SCF approval is easy: just document that your product has an SPF of at least 15 and pay a $10,000 donation to the Foundation’s Corporate Council. According to the EWG, “SCF-approved products are not required to protect from UVA rays.” In addition, 45 products using the SCF seal exceeded SPF 50+, which according to the FDA, is misleading consumers about how well these sunscreens protect from skin damage.

Sunlight is important for our health, so I try and make sure I get about 20 minutes a day of direct sun on my bare skin (arms, legs and torso), without sunscreen. This insures that I have enough Vitamin D, which is made in our skin as a result of exposure to sunlight. According to Michael Holick, M.D., Ph.D., and author ofThe Vitamin D Solution, vitamin D deficiency is one of the most commonly unrecognized medical conditions, leaving us at risk of developing not only osteoporosis and fractures but also “numerous serious and often fatal diseases, including several common cancers, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and heart disease.” Your doctor can test your D level with a blood test and recommend supplements if necessary.

So get out in the sun this summer, don’t get burned, and use a safe sunscreen when necessary. The best way to protect yourself and the planet is to choose products from companies known for their purity and integrity. Unless our concern grows for what we’re putting on our skin, truly natural products won’t have a fighting chance to survive in the market. It’s important to support products from trusted cosmetic and body care companies that use natural, certified organic, nontoxic and non-synthetic ingredients.

Try green romance this Valentine’s Day with Non-toxic perfume, candles, flowers chocolate, wine and champagne to enhance your health, vitality and in turn your sensuality.

The scene is set for romance…perfume, candles, flowers, chocolate, and champagne. But wait…some of these products might contain toxic chemicals! A new report from the Centers for Disease Control says that almost half of all Americans are now living with physical conditions and diseases that could be caused by exposure to toxic chemicals.

Know this: What you put on your body gets in to your body. Take perfume, for example. Most perfumes you buy in department stores can contain over 100 different synthetic chemicals to make the scent, plus things like phthalates, and parabens. These are endocrine disrupters – gender-bender chemicals that make girls develop earlier and reduce testosterone levels in boys. When shopping for perfume, look for those made from pure organic essential oils. They’re safe, non-toxic and more subtle than a synthetic perfume…your perfume won’t precede you when you enter a room and it won’t linger after you’ve gone!

What surrounds you can also get in your body and your bloodstream. Artificially scented candles for example, contain chemicals that can trigger asthma and allergies. Also, toxic chemicals have been found in the by-products in the combustion of artificial scents. Instead, choose candles scented with essential oils. Plus, most candles, unless otherwise labeled, are made from paraffin, a petroleum product, and fumes from paraffin wax have caused kidney and bladder tumors in lab animals. Choose beeswax candles with cotton wicks (make sure it doesn’t contain a lead core which will release into the air). There are two types of beeswax: solid, which are dipped or molded and burn well; or rolled, made from sheets of beeswax and tend to burn more quickly. Another good choice is soy candles.

How about roses…romantic right? Well, not if they’re sprayed with pesticides! These are toxic to our planet and to the growers. Look for organically grown flowers that use only natural repellants. When you choose something like that, you’re not only removing harmful chemicals from our environment, you’re also helping to improve the lives of flower growers, who are mostly women in developing nations.

Now, what goes in your body…Chocolate, which I think is my favorite food, is the ultimate in romance. Dark chocolate triggers feel-good chemical endorphins in our brain, which is so important for getting in the mood. The Aztecs believed that chocolate had aphrodisiac qualities, acting almost like a love potion. But most commercially made chocolate contains pesticides. So look for organic chocolates – they’re non toxic and delicious.

Finally, wine and champagne. Did you know that conventionally grown grapes are one of the most heavily sprayed crops on the planet? So, again, look for organic wine and champagnes. You can find some amazing organic varieties that taste wonderful, are very high quality and are competitively priced to those made conventionally.

Try green romance this Valentine’s Day. Non-toxic products will enhance your health, vitality and in turn your sensuality.

Cell phone use among children is a massive uncontrolled experiment on the brain as we don’t know the long term effects and that the FDA has never tested cell phones for safety.

Cell phone use among children is a massive uncontrolled experiment on the brain. So says Devra Davis, Ph.D., award-winning scientist, writer and founder of Environmental Health Trust, a nonprofit devoted to researching and controlling avoidable environmental health threats. “Children’s skulls are thinner and their brains are less dense so there’s more absorption of radio frequency signals,” she said at a recent event in San Francisco where she spoke about the Campaign for Safer Cell Phones. She added that we don’t know the long term effects of using cell phones, and that the FDA has never tested cell phones for safety. “If cell phones were a pharmaceutical drug,” she said, “they would never have gotten to market.”

Studies from around the world are now being released with some startling news about using cell phone safety. A Swedish study reports that radio waves from mobile phones penetrate deep into the brain not just around the ear. Researchers found that using your cell phone for 10 years or longer will double the risk of getting an acoustic neuroma – a tumor on a nerve connecting your ear to your brain – and children, because they have thinner skulls than adults and nervous systems that are still developing, are particularly vulnerable to it. Other scientists warn that there is a 420% greater chance that young people who start using a cell phone before age 20 will develop a brain tumor later in life.

But it’s not only long term use of cell phones that’s of concern; short-term use also can have adverse effects. Scientists at the Spanish Neuro Diagnostic Research Institute in Marbella have discovered that a call lasting just two minutes can alter the natural electrical activity of a child’s brain for up to an hour afterwards. Doctors fear that disturbed brain activity in children could affect their mood and ability to learn and lead to psychiatric and behavioral problems.

Britain’s advisory body on radiological hazards, the Health Protection Agency has urged parents to limit their children’s use of cell phones, recommending that younger children use cell phones only in emergencies. But, here in the U.S. there are no precautionary guidelines and toy companies are teaming up with wireless companies and going after kids as young as five.

More than half of American teens aged 13-16 have a cell phone and now. Most of them aren’t just using their phones to talk. They’re text messaging, taking pictures, playing video games and surfing the Web, which opens up a whole new set of concerns. I was also shocked to hear from friends that their teens sleep with their cell phones under their pillows at night. That’s an additional 7 to 8 hours of radiation going directly into their brains!

It’s not realistic or practical to give up our cell phones, but here are some suggestions on using them more safely:

Use a headset, or speaker phone whenever you or your child uses a cell phone. And never, ever put a cell phone up to the ear of a baby.

Limit your child’s use of a cell phone to essential purposes only and keep the calls short.

It’s best to keep your cell phone away from your body – do not clip it on your belt or put it in your pocket. Instead put it in your purse or backpack.

Switch off your phone when you go to sleep to reduce EMF (electro magnetic field) exposure.

Before making a call check the number of bars that indicate reception – a good signal means that the phone is using less radiation to transmit.

Charging your phone creates a high level of radiation, so charge it in another room.

Here’s a video aimed called “Cell Phones: Just Like Cigarettes?” that you and your teen might enjoy watching: (below).
Meat scraps once used for pet food now, thanks to Beef Products, Inc. has this pink slime marketed to hamburger makers and ends up in 70 percent of US burgers.

Have you heard about “pink slime” in ground beef? It’s the term affectionately used by meat industry insiders that refers to a pinkish paste made of meat scraps from the slaughterhouse floor. These scraps were once only used for pet food and cooking oil, but now, a company called Beef Products, Inc. created a process to collect the meat scraps, send them through a series of machines, and inject it with ammonia to kill pathogens like E. coli and salmonella. This “pink slime,” is marketed to hamburger makers and ends up in 70 percent of burgers in the United States. It’s also served in our country’s public school cafeterias!

According to a recent article in The New York Times, blocks of pink slime are mixed into conventional ground beef at McDonald’s and Burger King as well as in school lunches. America’s school lunch program bought 3.5 million pounds last year alone, the article reports, but ammonia doesn’t always kill pathogens. Government and industry records obtained by The New York Times show that in testing for the school lunch program, E. coli and salmonella have been found dozens of times in Beef Products, Inc. meat.

These types of pathogens are also found in chickens. Each year, salmonella and campylobacter from chicken infect at least 3.4 million Americans, send 25,500 to hospitals, and kill about 500, according to estimates by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While both salmonella and campylobacter are known to cause intestinal distress, campylobacter can lead to meningitis, arthritis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome, a severe neurological condition.

A recent USA Today investigation found that in the past three years, our country’s public schools have been giving our kids millions of pounds of beef and chicken that wouldn’t meet the quality or safety standards of many fast-food restaurants. McDonald’s, Burger King and Costco, for instance, test the ground beef they buy five to 10 times more often than the USDA tests beef made for schools during a typical production day. And the limits Jack in the Box and other big retailers set for certain bacteria in their burgers are up to 10 times more stringent than what the USDA sets for school beef.

For chicken, the USDA has supplied schools with thousands of tons of meat from old birds that might otherwise go to compost or pet food. KFC won’t buy them, and either will The Campbell Soup Company.

Translation: we give our schools food that wouldn’t be accepted at fast food restaurants. That’s crazy!

After USA TODAY presented USDA officials with its findings, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack promised an independent review of testing requirements for ground beef sent to schools.

Until hamburger meat and chicken becomes cleaner, your best line of defense is to buy organic whenever possible, and look for “air chilled” chicken, which is among the cleanest, according to Consumer Report. Consider buying “grass-fed” beef which means that cattle were raised on pasture instead of in factory feedlots and not given any growth hormones or antibiotics. This meat is also higher in Omega-3 fatty acids and lower in saturated fat and cholesterol, plus grass-fed beef has 500 percent more CLA, a beneficial fat, than cows fed a grain-based diet.

There are as many as 17,000 secret chemicals that are potentially hazardous to our health, and to the environment, that we unwittingly use in our homes every day.

There are as many as 17,000 secret chemicals that are potentially hazardous to our health, and to the environment, that we unwittingly use in our homes every day. Secret chemicals? Yes, according to a recent report from the Environmental Protection Agency, the names and physical properties of chemicals in things like flame retardants in furniture and household cleaners are hidden from consumers and virtually all public officials. This is because 33 years ago, a federal policy was designed to protect chemical industry trade secrets. So it’s now impossible for regulators to control dangers or for consumers to know which toxic substances they might be exposed to.

The EPA says that of the 84,000 chemicals in commercial use in the United States today, nearly 20 percent are secret. Of these, 151 are made in quantities of more than 1 million tons a year and 10 are used specifically in children’s products.

The Centers for Disease Control has been doing body burden testing on Americans for more than 10 years and has found toxic industrial chemicals in almost everyone tested. Also, The Environmental Working Group released a study that found nearly 250 chemicals including polycarbonate plastics, flame retardants and chemicals from nonstick, stain repellant, and greaseproof coatings in newborn babies! Today’s children harbor way more toxins than their grandparents.

Plus, we have no idea what the long term effects might be. These chemicals may exacerbate allergies and asthma, and can cause nausea, dizziness, eye, nose and throat irritation, cough, headache, flu-like symptoms, and skin irritation. As they accumulate in the body over time they can silently affect how efficiently your body runs—like whether you can maintain a healthy metabolism, burn fat well, and keep your hormones in balance. Some also are known to cause heart, lung or kidney damage and even cancer and nerve damage if exposure is prolonged. This in turn can have a devastating effect on your health. If your liver, for instance, becomes taxed by an overburden of chemicals, it may not work efficiently, setting you up for other health problems.

In Europe, things are different. The European Union is following what’s known as the “precautionary principle,” where the burden of proof that a product is potentially harmful lies with the chemical companies, not the public. The EU restricts hundreds of chemicals and requires the industry to test most chemicals before being sold on the market. That’s not the case in the US. Essentially, the only way we know something is toxic is after it has been used for years and causes problems for thousands of people. This is, of course, why the precautionary principle is so important. If the health effects of a product are unknown, it’s best to avoid it whenever possible. In other words: Better safe than sorry. With all the untested chemicals in use today, if you don’t follow this advice, you just became a lab rat in the study!

Our bodies are remarkably resilient in defending against the effects of these chemicals, but only to a point. Scientists question the cumulative effect. It is common sense to believe that the more chemicals you are exposed to, the more likely you will eventually be negatively affected by them. My advice is always choose safe, natural products when you shop. In my book “Super Natural Home” I offer suggestions on what to look for and even how to make some of your own.

Beth Greer, Super Natural Mom™, is the bestselling author of Super Natural Home as well as a radio talk show host and impassioned champion of toxin-free living who busts open the myth that our homes are safe havens.
Be an aware consumer. Most food labels use marketing ploys and can be deceptive. The FDA is now working on its own nutrition labeling system.

Food manufacturers are clever. They try to make us think that processed food is just as healthy as unprocessed food, or that a product containing high fructose corn syrup is “All Natural.” A green checkmark label called “Smart Choices” recently appeared on hundreds of food packages, including cereals like Cocoa Krispies and Froot Loops, and sodium-filled complete meal packages, beverages with artificial sugars, canned fruits and vegetables with additives. The good news is there was a huge public outcry. The FDA is now working on its own nutrition labeling system, and the Smart Choices label has stopped promoting its campaign.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a nonprofit health advocacy group, wants the FDA to also crack down on deceptive claims like “Strengthens your Immune System,” and “Helps Protect Healthy Joints!” when, in actuality there might be only one or two vitamins that were added. It also wants to tighten up definitions of “fiber” and “all natural.” Companies shouldn’t be able to brag about having “0 grams trans fat!” if the item contains significant amounts of saturated fat, says the group. And companies that boast that their foods are “made with whole grain” should be required to disclose how much of that grain is whole. It’s often less than half, says CSPI.

Be an aware consumer. Most food labels use marketing ploys and can be deceptive. Many claim that a food or ingredient can “support,” “enhance,” or “maintain” your joints, bones, heart, breasts, prostate, digestive health, etc. But most claims on food labels aren’t backed by much evidence. In other words, no packaged food product is a medical miracle, even if is boasts it on the label.

The amount of money behind these campaigns is colossal, which is why you won’t see your local farmer fighting back. After the recent backlash against high fructose corn syrup in nutrition circles, the Corn Refiners of America have spoken with their dollars and begun to campaign hard on behalf of their sugar. Don’t be fooled by this one either. High fructose sugar increases the risk of obesity and heart disease, and is almost certainly made from genetically modified corn.

With all this new labeling and campaigning, you’d think food shopping would become less confusing, not more. But it doesn’t have to be. My advice? Eat real food whenever you can…preferably food without labels. Shop locally, eat organic whenever possible, find your farmer at your local farmer’s market, or start your own garden. Your health and well being will be enhanced. Promise! Write me and tell me what changes you’ve made and how you’re doing.
